Pair of Antique Italian Watercolours by Filippo Indoni (1842–1908) – Signed & Dated 1880
Offered for sale is a fine pair of 19th century Italian watercolours by Filippo Indoni, signed and dated F. Indoni Roma 1880.
Filippo Indoni was a respected Italian artist who worked in Rome during the second half of the 19th century. He is known for his romanticised portrayals of country folk in and around the Roman countryside, depicted with dignity, charm and colour. His works are admired for their detail, soft palette and narrative quality.
Each painting in this pair features a rural figure in traditional costume: a smiling young woman carrying a woven basket, and a bearded man walking with a staff. Both are set within open Italian landscapes, painted with great skill and character. The compositions are well balanced, and the palette remains fresh and luminous.
